Aerosmith

Aerosmith is an American rock band, sometimes referred to as "The Bad Boys from Boston" and "America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band". Their style, which is rooted in blues-based hard rock, has come to also incorporate elements of pop, heavy metal, and rhythm and blues, and has inspired many subsequent rock artists. The band was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970. Guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton, originally in a band together called the Jam Band, met up with singer Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano, and formed Aerosmith. In 1971, Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford, and the band began developing a following in Boston. They were signed to Columbia Records in 1972, and released a string of multi-platinum albums, beginning with their 1973 eponymous debut album, followed by their 1974 album Get Your Wings. In 1975, the band broke into the mainstream with the album Toys in the Attic, and their 1976 follow-up Rocks cemented their status as hard rock superstars. The band released two more albums, toured extensively, and charted a string of Hot 100 singles. By the end of the 1970s, they were among the most popular hard rock bands in the world and developed a loyal following of fans, often referred to as the "Blue Army". However, drug addiction and internal conflict took their toll on the band, which resulted in the departures of Perry and Whitford, in 1979 and 1981 respectively. They were replaced by Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay. The band did not fare well between 1980 and 1984, releasing a lone album, Rock in a Hard Place, which went gold but failed to match their previous successes.
Perry and Whitford returned in 1984 and the band signed a new deal with Geffen Records. After a comeback tour, the band recorded Done with Mirrors (1985), which won some critical praise but failed to come close to commercial expectations. It was not until the band sobered up and released 1987's Permanent Vacation that they regained the level of popularity they had experienced in the 1970s. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, the band scored several hits and won numerous awards for music from the multi-platinum albums Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993), and Nine Lives (1997). The band also became a pop culture phenomenon with popular music videos and notable appearances in television, film, and video games. Their comeback has been described as one of the most remarkable and spectacular in rock 'n' roll history. Additional albums followed in 2001 and 2004. After 42 years of performing, the band continues to tour and record music. The band's next album is expected to be released in the spring of 2012.
Aerosmith is the best-selling American rock band of all time, having sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, including 66.5 million albums in the United States alone. They also hold the record for the most gold and multi-platinum albums by an American group. The band has scored 21 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, nine number-one Mainstream Rock hits, four Grammy Awards, and ten MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and were included among both Rolling Stone's and VH1's lists of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Trivium

Trivium is an American heavy metal band from Orlando, Florida, formed in 1999. Signed to Roadrunner Records, the band has released five studio albums, eleven singles, and twelve music videos. Their latest album, In Waves was released on August 9, 2011.

History
Formation and debut album (1999—2004)

At his Lake Brantley High School talent show, guitarist Matt Heafy performed a cover version of "Self Esteem" by The Offspring. Vocalist Brad Lewter noticed Heafy and asked him to try out for his band. The pair went over to drummer Travis Smith's house where they played Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls". Impressed with Heafy's performance, they accepted him into the band known as Trivium. After several shows at bars and local clubs, Lewter quit the band and Heafy took over his position as vocalist. In early 2003, Trivium went into the recording studio to record its first high-quality demo disc. A copy of the demo was heard by German label Lifeforce, who signed Trivium. The band entered a studio to record its debut album, Ember to Inferno.
As time went on, Corey Beaulieu joined. In 2004, Paolo Gregoletto joined as the band's bassist to replace Brent Young, before a tour with Machine Head. The album Ember to Inferno managed to garner the interest of Roadrunner Records representatives, who later signed Trivium to a record deal. They then began writing songs for their major label debut.

Ascendancy (2004—2006)

In 2004, Trivium recorded its second album, Ascendancy, in Audiohammer Studios and Morrisound Recording in Florida. Produced by Heafy and Jason Suecof, the album was released in March 2005. The album debuted at #151 on the Billboard 200 and at #4 on the Top Heatseekers chart. Allmusic reviewer Johnny Loftus stated on Ascendancy, Trivium are a "ridiculously tight quartet, unleashing thrilling dual guitar passages and pummeling kick drum gallops as surely as they do melodic breaks and vicious throat screams" and Rod Smith of Decibel magazine praised "Smith’s impeccably articulated beats, bassist Paolo Gregoletto’s contained thunder, and, especially, Heafy and guitarist Corey Beaulieu’s liquid twin leads." The album was also recognized as the "Album of the Year" by Kerrang! magazine. Later in 2007 the band received their first Gold Record in the UK for more than 100,000 Sales.

In 2005, Trivium played the first Saturday set on the main stage at Download Festival in Castle Donington, England, credited by Matt Heafy as the gig that really launched Trivium on the world stage. Singles and music videos were released for "Like Light to the Flies", "Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr", "A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation", and "Dying in Your Arms". The videos for these songs gained rotation on MTV2's Headbangers Ball and Pull Harder on The Strings of Your Martyr has become one of their most well known songs and has become the song that they usually close their set with. In support of the album, Trivium played on numerous tours with well known artists. The band opened for Killswitch Engage, Iced Earth, Fear Factory, and Machine Head, who were one of Heafy's largest influences. Trivium played at Road Rage 2005, Ozzfest, and made an appearance at the Download Festival. Ascendancy was re-released in 2006 with four bonus tracks and a DVD containing all of the band's music videos and live footage.

The Crusade (2006—2008)

In April 2006, after a headlining tour featuring Mendeed and God Forbid as openers, Trivium entered the studio with Suecof and Heafy producing again. The band played the Download Festival again, this time on the main stage with Korn and Metallica. Trivium released The Crusade in October 2006. Debuting at number 25 on the Billboard 200, the album sold over 32,000 copies in its first week of sales. The album was a critical success, with Andy Greene of Rolling Stone claiming "Nothing mars a good metal record like so-called harsh vocals" and Don Kaye of Blabbermouth.net stating The Crusade "is one of the best metal releases of 2006 and quite possibly the heavy music album of the year." On The Crusade, Heafy's vocals changed from the metalcore scream that was featured on the band's previous albums, to more singing on this album. This new singing style, along with the band's thrash metal music were criticised of sounding too much like Metallica, who was a major influence on the band. Heafy commented on the change:
"If anyone is wondering why the screaming is gone it's because the four of us were never into bands that scream and we don't like any of the current bands that scream, so we asked ourselves why we're doing it. This time around I wanted to be a better singer because that's what we wanted to hear, so we dropped the screaming and did a lot of vocal training and vocal work."
—Matt Heafy
The band supported the album by touring with Iron Maiden and Metallica, appearing on the Black Crusade tour with Machine Head, Arch Enemy, DragonForce and Shadows Fall, as well as headlining a European tour with supporting acts Annihilator and Sanctity and acquiring an opening slot on the Family Values Tour with Korn. Trivium was named the best live band of 2006 at the Metal Hammer Golden God Awards.

Shogun (2008—2009)

Trivium started working on a new album with producer Nick Raskulinecz in October 2007. Heafy stated he wanted to bring back the screaming that was found on Ascendancy. The band stated they did not choose to work with Suecof again because they already recorded three albums with him and they wanted to explore new ideas. Recording ended June 2008. In an interview with the UK's Metal Hammer magazine in May 2008, Matt Heafy stated that their new album was to have "more thrash influences, more screaming and more raptors. Possibly more screaming because of the raptors." He told Revolver magazine, "For the first time, we can't look at our songs and say who the riffs sound like. We're really making our own stuff and our own kind of music and art form, and that's exciting." In September 2008, Trivium released their fourth full-length album, Shogun. The album sold 24,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, and debut at number 23 on the Billboard 200 chart as well as Number 1 in the UK Rock Album Charts.
On August 14, Metal Hammer posted the following message on their blog, as stated by Matt Heafy: “We have some stuff not as a whole band but each individual guy has maybe ten to twenty songs. I have done about fifteen, but I have gotten rid of all but six because I kept the good ones as I kept going on, the newer songs I was writing were stronger and better so I got rid of the ones that weren’t as good. Paolo (Gregoletto, bass) has a bunch of songs, like twenty or so, but he keeps cutting back as well. Everyone keeps writing as many as they can, but then cutting back the weak ones and not worrying about trying to make them better songs.”
However, it was confirmed on November 7, at the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia, that the band would "not be returning to Philadelphia for awhile or touring as much" due to plans to return to the recording studio's to record their 5th studio album during mid-2010.
Trivium toured extensively throughout 2009 in support of Shogun, with two headline legs of the US, a headline slot on the Mayhem Festival second stage, a Australia/Japan leg, as well as a conclusive UK run in March 2010. Throughout their headline runs they have been supported by Chimaira, Darkest Hour, Dirge Within, Whitechapel, Rise to Remain and Black Tide. They were also booked as a co-headliner for Australia's Soundwave Festival in February 2010.
Travis Smith unofficially left the band on the second leg of the "Into the Mouth of Hell We Tour" tour. On February 4, 2010, the band announced that Travis had indeed officially left the band and fill-in drummer, ex-drum tech, Nick Augusto, was replacing him. Augusto is a former member of Maruta and Metal Militia, in which he played in with Gregoletto. The band has not yet stated the reason of his departure.

Departure of Smith and God of War III contribution (2010)

A couple of days after the release of Trivium's "Shattering the Skies Above", the band's first release that does not feature original drummer Travis Smith, frontman Matt Heafy opened up about why Trivium no longer includes Smith, and how former drum tech Nick Augusto was made into his replacement.
"We were coming to the point where the band was – not necessarily dissolving – but dissolving in creativity and maybe in live fire and energy, so we had to make a change for the positive," Heafy told Noisecreep. "Thankfully, we were able to find Nick, who was able to step it up and really be that guy to take us to the next level."
While Trivium's relationship with Smith had deteriorated over the years, the band had no immediate plans to replace him when he announced in late October 2009 that he would be sitting out the 'Into the Mouth of Hell We March' tour to take care of "some personal business." It was not until after the band members started playing with Augusto on the tour that they realized the injection of new blood served Trivium well.
"I was familiar with Nick's stuff with Maruta, and I knew he could play really fast, but I was really curious on how he'd do with our band," Heafy said. "I remember stepping out of the car and hearing him practicing 'Into the Mouth of Hell We March,' and I'd never heard the song played with that ferocity. It sounded like the album, but it was a little faster, harder and angrier. The first song we played [with him] was 'Rain' [from 2005's Ascendancy] and I remember him playing the end section and it was so effortless it almost looked fake. I looked at Corey and we both started laughing at the same time. I could tell we were both just thinking, 'Who the fuck is this guy?' So it's very cool he was able to bring that intensity to stuff that already existed and bring his own flair as well."
To this day, Heafy insists he has no idea exactly what 'personal issues' prevented Smith from touring, but he is grateful for the opportunity to play with Augusto, and wishes Smith the best of luck with his future endeavors.
"We told him over the phone [that we were continuing with Augusto,] and it was hard for everyone involved," Heafy said. "But I hope it's going to be something Travis recognizes was for the better for him in years to come. For his own health and well-being as well and for our own. I heard that he's doing very well now and that's the best you can wish for. And we hope he does amazingly, no matter what he picks in life to do next."
In an interview with OneMetal.com, guitarist Corey Beaulieu added, "...over time, things just kinda weren’t working out, and we did a headline tour of the US and about halfway through Travis just said he wasn’t going to do the next tour, so regardless we had to think about getting someone to fill in, then once we started playing with Nick we just knew it was the right thing." On the nature of Smith's dismissal from the band, Beaulieu stated
"...things were falling apart, and we just kind of pulled the trigger first, just to get it done, move forward and get the new guy settled in and comfortable. It’s been working really great with Nick and when people see the show they will see why."
Trivium contributed to the God of War III soundtrack by recording the song, "Shattering the Skies Above". It is exclusively included on God of War: Blood & Metal, a digital EP that comes with the Ultimate Edition of the game and is available from the iTunes Store. The band has also recorded a cover of the song "Slave New World" by Sepultura. "Shattering the Skies Above" was also released exclusively to their fanclub (TriviumWorld) on February 12, 2010 and was released widely on February 15. The next day their Sepultura cover "Slave New World" was released as a free download for members of the UK via Metal Hammer UK. Both of aforementioned songs re-issued on their deluxe version of the album "In Waves".

In Waves (2010—present)

In an interview with STV, Heafy has said: "Things are great and its definitely preparing us for our next record which is what we have been prepping for and we have been writing for it. It's going to be and has to be the best record we have ever done. Every record we say that but this is going to be definitive, this is going to be the one." Bassist Paolo Gregoletto adds: "We have been rehearsing full new songs at soundchecks and stuff. We have a lot of new ideas and every year we talk about what we want the album to be and we are still in the stages of finding where I think it's going to be and it's starting to shape up right now. We just have tons of material written already and after this tour, [we'll] take a small break and then we're hitting the warehouse where we rehearse and write the music and we're going to start demoing and hopefully we'll get it started by the summer and finished by the fall."
In an interview with Guitar World, it was stated that for their forthcoming fifth studio album, Trivium will move forward by looking back. The group will forgo the complex epic compositions, tricked-out, leads and seven-string guitars that characterized its past two albums. Trivium will take an approach similar to that of its second album Ascendancy (2005) by using uncluttered riffs, drop-D tuning, and more straightforward solos. "When we did Ascendancy, we were writing specifically for the songs, not to show how well we could play," says frontman and guitarist Matt Heafy. "That wasn't exactly the case with our next two records."
Adds Heafy’s co-guitarist, Corey Beaulieu, "We're making sure every part in every song needs to be there and is super-catchy and doesn't go over people's heads." Heafy stated via Twitter that they will be entering the studio on January 2. Matt Heafy stated on December 11, that there are going to be 10–13 songs on the new album.
In the bonus content for the November 2011 issue of Guitar World, Matt Heafy talked about why the band decided to record this album in Drop Db as opposed to Drop D. "For the whole record of 'In Waves' we're in Drop Db, so it's kind of like (Ascendency), just a half step lower, and everything that we do from all of the albums is half a step flat. It's mainly for the vocals. (It's) not that I can't sing higher, it's just easier with the amount of shows we do."
On January 31, 2011, it was announced that Trivium would take part in the Mayhem Festival for the second time alongside Machine Head, In Flames, Megadeth, Godsmack, and Disturbed.
It was announced on February 18, that Trivium will be special guests for Iron Maiden, on their Final Frontier world tour at the London 02 on August 6, 2011. On their official website, Matt Heafy says "We couldn't be more honoured and excited to share a stage with the legendary Iron Maiden. This will be Trivium's first UK show in a long time & we'll have a new record under our belts to debut. Lights Out London for an immense night of metal. Up The Irons."On May 21, Trivium's new single "In Waves" leaked onto the internet. On June 6, Matt Heafy announced that the record would also be called In Waves on Twitter.
On 6 June, Metal Hammer revealed that the band have decided to entitle their upcoming album In Waves and that it would be released on August 9, 2011. On 19 June, Trivium debuted two new songs live in Birmingham entitled "Dusk Dismantled" and "Black". Behemoth

BEHEMOTH have always pushed the limits of their abilities and defied the boundaries of death and black metal. Now, the Polish metal kings have returned with a new offering, The Apostasy, which is destined to become both the defining release of the band's career and one of the most revered and dynamic offerings the genre has seen in years. The Apostasy's basic meaning is "to go against religion," and with Poland being one of the top religious countries in the world, BEHEMOTH strives to convey that being religious is not the key to happiness. This album takes everything to the next level, as Nergal (guitars, vocals) promises "more speed, aggression and blasphemy than ever before." The Apostasy is easily the group's most ambitious and epic offering yet and was recorded in the band's hometown of Gdansk with Nergal and longtime sound engineer Malta in the producers' chairs. The effort was once again mixed with the acclaimed Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah, SYL) at Dugout Studios in Sweden and will be mastered by Bjorn Engelmann (Rammstein).

BEHEMOTH built their career upon their unrelenting touring schedule, performing over 325 shows worldwide in support of their 2005 release, Demigod. The group kicks off The Apostasy's worldwide touring cycle on Ozzfest 2007 as direct support to second-stage headliners Hatebreed. This event marks BEHEMOTH's biggest U.S. tour yet, further setting the stage for the band to become the new leaders of the genre.

Originally formed by a teenage Nergal in 1991, BEHEMOTH quickly made a name for themselves in black metal circles with four early cult albums: From The Pagan Wastelands, ...And The Forests Dream Eternally, Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) and Grom. But it wasn't until the release of Pandemonic Incantations and the addition of Inferno (drums) that the band started to realize their true potential. Songs became catchier, where the musicianship and production vastly improved. With Satanica, BEHEMOTH started to incorporate more of a death metal approach to their songwriting. The high, raspy, black metal screeches of the first four albums were replaced with a forceful yet audible death metal growl. Two successful European tours followed with Deicide and Satyricon as the band started to amass a rabid following. In 2001, Thelema.6 was released in the U.S. Truly a landmark in the extreme metal community, Thelema.6 saw the band combining their early black metal influences with the utter viciousness and technicality of Satanica.

Now an unstoppable live force, touring opportunities with bands such as Nile and Morbid Angel began to pour in. For those who thought the band had reached their peak, nothing could prepare them for what came next. Zos Kia Cultus (Here And Beyond) was unleashed upon unsuspecting audiences in 2003. The album saw BEHEMOTH set a new standard in massive production and song craft for all others to meet, as they take a slight turn away from the more straight-ahead brutality of Thelema.6 and put more of an emphasis on groove. As rave reviews started to flow in, the group made its American live debut at the New Jersey March Metal Meltdown festival. The several extensive nationwide tours that followed (which included treks with the likes of Deicide, Amon Amarth, Halford, Testament, Superjoint Ritual, Opeth, Lacuna Coil and Six Feet Under) helped to make 2003 a breakthrough year for the band.

Demigod was the next logical progression of the band's already colossal sound. The songs took on an even more aggressive feel this time around, with more traditional metal song structures and slightly more melodic lead work. In an effort to match the grandness of the composition, a professional male choir was brought in to record real vocal harmonies for "Sculpting the Throne ov Seth." A slew of major worldwide touring insanity followed with the likes of such acts as King Diamond, Suffocation, Danzig, Morbid Angel, Chimaira and The Black Dahlia Murder, helping the group to more than solidify themselves as one of the genre's most exciting new artists. The touring campaign for Demigod was ultimately capped off with an appearance on 2006's Sounds of The Underground tour alongside As I Lay Dying, In Flames and Trivium where BEHEMOTH quickly became the most talked about act due to their vicious and unrelenting live show, which immediately garnered them a whole new legion of devoted fans.

While most bands struggle to evolve and stay vital within the extreme music genre, BEHEMOTH manages to do so effortlessly. The Apostasy is destined to continue the legacy.

Sepultura

One thing is certain: SEPULTURA is one of the major names in metal history. Being in the business for about 27 years, founding a genre of its own and influencing a whole generation of younger bands, these brazilians have proved to be a true institution. Even though the band had to go through rough times due to several significant line-up changes, different record labels, various changes in the overall musical environment, they never backed down, continuously following their path – always re-emerging stronger than ever before.

Enter 2011 SEPULTURA have not only signed a brand new worldwide record deal with Nuclear Blast, made a statement by playing an amazing charity concert with the brazilian Orquestra Experimental de Repertório they also have traced back their roots, composing a brand new album that will mark another new chapter in the band's history. With “Kairos” Andreas Kisser & co. show how easily they can combine the sheer brutality of “Beneath The Remains” and “Arise” with the modern, yet thrashy and ultra groovy approach of classic albums like “Chaos A.D.” and “Roots” (including some really exciting tribal drumming again!) without sounding calculated rather than extremely fresh, hungry and simply back on track!

Like its predecessors, “Kairos” was recorded at Trauma Studios in Sao Paulo, Brazil. To fit the music SEPULTURA present on “Kairos”, they tapped Producer Roy Z. (JUDAS PRIEST, HALFORD, BRUCE DICKINSON, HELLOWEEN etc.) to take care of the production. No doubt, he did a perfect job on this one since “Kairos” easily could be “Roots” logical follow-up – even soundwise.

Of course one could go on and on talking about the band and this album in particular, but now it's time for you to judge – play it loud, really loud!

Breaking Benjamin

If you want to get inside Ben Burnley’s head, just look at the Dear Agony album cover-- it’s an actual scan of the singer’s brain. The lyrics to the first single, “I Will Not Bow,” provide further insight: “Now’s your chance to run for cover / I don’t want to change the world / I just want to leave it colder.” Then there’s the musicality—trademark Breaking Benjamin, full of uber-catchy choruses, dexterous drumming, intricate, powerful riffs and a darkly compelling vibe. It’s a sound that gave the band the 1 rock hits “So Cold” and “Sooner or Later” off 2004’s platinum We Are Not Alone,” and “Breath” and “Diary of Jane” off 2006’s recently certified platinum Phobia. On Dear Agony, produced again by David Bendeth (Paramore, Killswitch Engage), Breaking Benjamin upped the ante, as Burnley notes: “We’ve been together 8 years, which is like 20 years these days. We’ve honed our sound and focus. Being on the road, you become a better musician, and the more music you listen to and the more experiences and people you’re exposed to, the more complicated you become, the more complicated your music can become.”

Indeed, behind insinuating layers of melodies and radio-ready rock riffs are intense and complex feelings explored and expressed by Burnley. “The title track started as a sort of ‘letter to agony.’ I have some symptoms and health issues that just won’t go away, so I equate it to anybody who has a permanent illness, in that you deal with it and it becomes a part of you.” That said, Dear Agony is the first album Burnley recorded since he quit drinking. “I can’t say if it would have been a better or worse album if I’d been drinking. For me, drinking was a way to put myself in an inspirational mindset to write and create. Writing sober is more time-consuming… waiting for that inspiration to hit. But when you do write, you know it’s good, you don’t have to wait until you’re sober the next day and listen to it,” he laughs. Proof positive of Burnley’s ever-increasing songwriting skills are the 11 stellar tracks on Dear Agony--the dynamic ‘I Will Not Bow” was snapped up for the Bruce Willis flick “Surrogates,” while ‘Give Me a Sign” is an instantly memorable mid-tempo classic, in contrast to the raw, aggro intensity of “Hopeless.”

Recorded at the appropriately named House of Loud studio in New Jersey with David Bendeth, Breaking Benjamin was thrilled to do their third album with the Brit producer again at the helm. As bassist Mark James notes, “it’s the first time we worked in a studio owned by a producer, which helped the process immensely as far as a comfort factor. We were not afraid to try something new, to jump off the edge of the cliff and put ourselves out there. The bar has been raised pretty high, but it’s crucial to stay relevant and excited and exciting.”

Though Dear Agony is a forceful title, it doesn’t sum up any theme for the CD, as Burnley explains. “It’s pointless to ask me what a song is about—it’s about whatever the listener feels when they listen to it. That’s what the song exists for.” Though Burnley is the sole lyricist, he did some collaboration with Jasen Rauch, guitarist of Grammy-nominated band RED. “He has his band, I have mine, and they’re two totally different things,” Burnley notes, “but together we have a flow. I’m really fortunate to know him and work with him.” Akin to Tool and Nirvana, two Breaking Benjamin inspirations, Burnley likewise crafts cryptic, evocative lyrics. “I don’t particularly like listening to songs that are very obviously about something unless it’s something really, really clever and cool,” says the frontman. “I try to make it so that every line is a self-contained thing.” Though Burley titled the previous CD Phobia, he finds writing about personal issues hasn’t proved cathartic, especially when it comes to his well-documented fear of flying. “I didn’t get into a band to fly. I never kept it a secret. That’s one thing I’m not going to bend on,” he states. “I’ll have that fear until the day I die. Being in a band doesn’t change that in any way whatsoever.”

That said, BB ventures far from their Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania home base, touring in front of rabid fans for months at a time. For his part, guitarist Aaron Fink is looking forward to road-testing the new tunes: “You see the visceral reaction between you and the audience, and you know what songs and riffs are working,” he says, adding, “If you like Breaking Benjamin, you’re gonna like this record.” James concurs: “All our records are quite eclectic, so there’s a song for any mood. We’re excited to tour, and along with our great catalog, we now have these new songs to reach from.”

As for Breaking Benjamin’s growth since Saturate, Burnley cites an apt analogy: “If you have a kid, and you’re around the kid every day, you don’t know how much it’s growing. But if you spent a few months away and came back and looked at him, and he was three feet taller and had facial hair, you’d be like “wow, you’ve changed so drastically!” That’s how it is. I haven’t noticed the change as much, because I’ve been there creating it every single step of the way.”

Breaking Benjamin believe it’s a need to not do the same thing twice that created the musical evolution evident on Dear Agony. “I never put out anything I’m not 100 percent satisfied with, but then again, you’re never going to find a group of people who have the same favorite song,” says Burnley. “They’re all going to say ‘this song rocks, this song sucks.’” That said, Breaking Benjamin is thrilled with their place in the rock pantheon. “I totally realize that we’d be nothing without our fans. That’s just a given. We’re the kind of people who have our jobs because what we like just so happens to be what a lot of people like,” Burnley concludes. “I’ll be honest: I write music for myself, and if other people like it, that’s awesome.”

Psycroptic

Hailing from the remote island of Tasmania, Psycroptic have progressively carved a niche of their own within today’s overcrowded Metal scene. Staying clear of trends, the band incorporate many elements of music – extreme and otherwise – to capture a sound that is uniquely their own. Not to be pigeonholed, Psycroptic stand apart from the horde and add a fresh element in the extreme metal realm with their precise blend of brutality, intensity and groove.

After touring relentlessly overseas, they took the US by storm after the impressive 2008 release of Ob(Servant). They then toured with Carcass, Nile, The Black Dahlia Murder and Kataklysm, among others, leaving audiences no choice but to acknowledge this brutal and modern metal powerhouse from the island down under. They’ve built on this notoriety and honed their sound on The Inherited Repression, a more than worthy successor that challenges and rewards the listener with each spin.

History

Psycroptic was formed in 1999 by brothers Dave (drums) and Joe (guitar) Haley who had previously been involved in a band called Disseminate, which had recorded a demo in 1998 before disbanding. Shortly afterward, the Haleys created Psycroptic with Cameron Grant on bass and vocalist Matthew Chalk, who soon after became a drummer with established local death metal act M.S.I.. With assistance from the Tasmanian Council of the Arts, the band recorded The Isle of Disenchantment that was designed only as a demo but the result impressed the band enough to release it as a proper CD. Shortly after it was released the band was invited to play shows in Melbourne and in late 2001 they featured at the annual Metal for the Brain festival in Canberra for the first time, later also appearing in 2003 and 2005.
The band recorded its second album The Scepter of the Ancients in 2003 for release through American label Unique Leader. The same year the group played its first full Australian tour in support of American death metal band Incantation. The Haley brothers also joined Sydney-based industrial death metal band The Amenta during this period and recorded the album Ocassus with that group. Dave Haley also recorded an EP called "Atom and Time" with Ruins, a Hobart black metal band formed by Alex Pope in 2000. He has been a member of this band ever since; Joe Haley has been the touring guitarist for Ruins since they undertook an Australian tour with Satyricon in 2006.
2004 was a breakthrough year for the band as they played a second Australian tour, this time with Deeds of Flesh and then headed to Europe for a wide-ranging tour with Swedish bands Dismember and Anata. However, Chalk expressed reluctance to undertake the journey so his friend Jason Peppiatt from another Hobart band called Born Headless was recruited to play the shows in his stead. On returning to Australia, Psycroptic played two legs of the Metal for the Brain in Canberra and Brisbane, and a final show in their hometown of Hobart. Following this, disharmony between the band saw Chalk leave Psycroptic, and Peppiatt replace him.[4] Since his departure from Psycroptic, Chalk has continued to play drums with M.S.I. as well as a doom band called Space Raven and act in the vocal role in a number of other groups that includes Mephistopheles, playing bass in Born Headless and several other projects including the vocal position with Swedish band Spawn of Possession since late 2009.
Psycroptic then did a handful of Australian dates with Hate Eternal before heading in to begin work on their third album, Symbols of Failure, their first for Neurotic. The release was followed by another European excursion with acts like America's Nile and another Australian tour followed, this time with Cannibal Corpse.
Work began on the follow-up to Symbols of Failure in early 2007 before some European shows with Deicide. Joe Haley collapsed after one show and suffered a seizure. He later recovered but the last few dates for the tour were cancelled. On 10 June Psycroptic featured at the Come Together Music Festival in Sydney. The Haley brothers seem to have since put their membership with The Amenta aside to concentrate on Psycroptic; however Dave Haley joined Blood Duster in September 2007.
In May 2008 Psycroptic played their first shows in New Zealand alongside Ruins. The following month it was announced that Psycroptic had been signed to Nuclear Blast Records. Shortly after, the band released their fourth studio album, entitled Ob(Servant) in October 2008. The live DVD Initiation was filmed in Melbourne and released in 2010. The band toured Australia with Decapitated, Origin and Misery Index in March 2010, and is due to release a new album in February 2012.
